2020-04-22  Final Average and Grade Recovery

                                                       Final Average

    Dear Parents and Students:

I’ve outlined below how Mr. Tudor has approved for me to compute your final average for the school year. This is the plan I’ll follow, and it overrides any other plans I have developed.

How to Compute Your Final Average

Begin by computing your average for the first three quarters. This will be your base average. If you are satisfied with this grade, send me an email letting me know. Your school year with me will be over. If you would like to improve your score, I’ll use your work from quarter 4 to improve your final average. This work will add points to your base average. I can add 0-5 points to that average based on how many points you have gained during quarter 4. If you choose to continue working until 5/8/20, you will have had the opportunity to gain approximately 610 points. The number of points I add to your base average depends on the scale below.

4th quarter points in this range                                get this many points added to base average

    0-212                                                                          0

    213-280                                                                       1

    281-390                                                                       3

    391-500                                                                       4

    501-610                                                                       5

For example: If your base average is 74 and you have gained 445 points for quarter 4, your final average will be 74+4—or 78.

Using this formula, if you like the points you’ll have added to your base average at this point, send me an email letting me know, and your school year with me will be over. However, you can also choose to continue the Membean assignments: study for two sessions per week with each session lasting at least 15 minutes. You can also do one session for 30 minutes. The week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday.

    Grade Recovery

You did not receive zeroes during quarter 4. If you have blank spaces, I do not have that assignment from you and you missed an opportunity to add points to quarter 4. However, I’ll give you Grade Recovery opportunities on these assignments: Assignment 1 (3/18), Assignment 2 (3/19), Prufrock 1 (3/23), Prufrock 2 (3/25). I’ll post the Grade Recovery assignments on my page by Friday, April 24, 2020.

    2020-04-22  End of the Year

    Dear Parents and Students:

I’m sure you have heard about the ending of the 2019-2020 school year and the Distance Learning program for the fourth quarter of the school year. I’ll post letters sent out by Dr. Bradshaw and Mr. Tudor explaining how school work done during this time will be used to average students’ grades for the school year. Briefly, parents and students should decide if they want to use the average of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters for the final average, or if they want me to also include grades from the 4th quarter to figure the final average. For those who choose this option, I’ll develop a scale based on your 4th quarter average and use it to add points to your first through third quarter average. The fourth quarter work will not have any negative impact on your final average.

If you want to use the average of the first three quarters, you no longer need to do any Distance Learning assignments. If you want to use the fourth quarter work, please continue to do the assignments up to May 8, 2020.

Please send me an email letting me know if you are satisfied with your first through third quarter average and would like for me to use that as your final average of the year.

Students who want to use the fourth quarter work as part of their average won’t have any new assignments after May 8th. Also, students can have up to May 22nd to complete the work that has been given. If you have missed any work, you can make it up without any loss of points. If you want to redo the Triand assignments, let me know and I’ll reset them if I can. If I can’t, I’ll make a new assignment that you can do to replace the old ones.

For those few who haven’t done any of the Distance Learning work, please take the time to complete your work if you are not satisfied with your 1st-3rd quarter average. You can complete this work by May 22nd without any penalties.

We are wrapping up Distance Learning over the next few weeks. You can get a grade for any work that you received a zero for or have a blank space for. Just do the work and there won't be any penalties. If you need to make up the Triand work, let me know so that I can re-open the assignment for you. If you need to catch up on the Membean work, just do more than two 15 minute sessions until you catch up.

I'm waiting for Mr. Tudor to tell us exactly how we will finish up the year and assign grades. Remember, there will be no EOCs and no final exams.

Hello, students. From now until the end of the school year, these will be your assignments:

    1. Continue to practice Membean two sessions per week. Practice at least 15 minutes for each sessions. My Membean report shows that none of my students have met all of their goals at this point.
    2. Do any Membean assignment that is currently open.
    3. Do any Membean assessment that is currently open.

Until the end of the school year, work is always due by Sunday at 4:00 pm.

    2020-04-03  Spring Break

    Dear students:

We'll start Spring Break today. You should continue doing your Membean assignments--two sessions per week, 15 minutes per each session. There will be no other assignments during Spirit Week, which ends on April 13.

    Enjoy yourselves.

2020-04-02 Because Governor Closed Schools for Remainder of the Year

I don't think that announcement was an April Fool's hoax. So this is it. I'm working on a pattern to cut down on how much work you'll have to do for me. I'll continue giving high quality work, but it may be cut back to 2 multiple choice assignments per week. You will continue to do the Membean practice--even during Masters Week. After Masters Week, there will be Membean assignments and assessments. In all, you wil most likely have 3-4 multiple assignments per week. We won't be doing any more short answer type questions.

After Masters Week, all of your work will be due by 4:00 on Sunday. You can work on it whenever you want to throughout the week. Let me know what problems you are having. I am very suspicious when people begin contacting me for the first time on Sunday afternoon to tell me the problems they have been having getting their work done.

  • 2020-04-01 A Few Changes

Hello, everyone.  I hope you and everyone in your home remain healthy and happy throughout this difficult time. I want everyone to return to school with the most reinvigorated physical, emotional, and spiritual sense possible.

A few events have caused me and a few other teachers to rethink our distance learning set up.

I will continue to stress that we all keep in mind that we are NOT on vacation. We are simply working from home. You will need to exercise a tremendous amount of self-control and self-direction. You have to make yourself turn in your original work and not work from antother place.

    Assignments:

I have reduced your assignments to two online activities per week along with two Membean study sessions of at least 15 minutes long per week. Soon there will be other Membean Assignments. All of the assignments are meant to take you approximately 15 minutes to complete.

You no longer have to email assignments to me unless I tell you to do so. I will post assignments on my class page no later than 10:00 a.m.; however, I probably will post assignments before then. You need to have completed the work no later than 1:00 p.m.  At that point, the work is late and will lose 10% of its points for each part of the hour it is late until 6:00 p.m. After 6:00 p.m. your work is worth 30% until 5:00 a.m. the next day. I won't take it after then. I have streched to be as lenient as I can--I know real problems are happening, but I also have people who just aren't doing anything.

If you get mixed up on this, email me.

    Communication:

We need to stay in touch throughout this time. You can send me your emails throughout the day, and I’ll spend 1:00 to 2:00 responding.

You can stay away from rumor and check out Governor Kemp's official announcements on the COVID-19 crisis by checking the information at gov.georgia.gov. Clicking the "Executive Action" tab will keep you up on what's been decided.

  • 2020-03-19    If You Missed Yesterday's Work

There are several people who did not turn in yesterday's work. I will give you the chance to do that work and send it to me today. Please keep in mind that, as I said in class, we are not on vacation. I have no idea of how the board of education is going to handle grades during this time. Teachers have been told to do as we normally do. Usually, when students don't do their work, I give them zeroes.

Hello, everyone.  I hope you and everyone in your home remain healthy and happy throughout this difficult time. I want everyone to return to school with the most reinvigorated physical, emotional, and spiritual sense possible.

I will continue to stress that we all keep in mind that we are NOT on vacation. We are simply working from home. You will need to exercise a tremendous amount of self-control and self-direction. Mr. Tudor has placed a number of expectations on teachers, and we must place expectations on you in order to meet them. To that end, I have outlined below how I want us to continue with our learning until we can return to the classroom. Please remember that I am giving you a broad outline. I may revise procedures as we continue into our hiatus.

    Assignments:

I will post assignments on my class page no later than 10:00 a.m.; however, I probably will post assignments before then. You need to have completed the work and emailed it to me no later than 1:00 p.m.  At that point, the work is late and will lose 20% of its points for each part of the hour it is late(20% to 40% to 60%) until 4:00 p.m. I will not give any points for the work after this time.

I’ll grade the assignments and email a copy back to you. The grade will go into Infinite Campus.

    Communication:

We need to stay in touch throughout this time. You can send me your emails throughout the day, and I’ll spend 1:00 to 3:00 responding. If I haven’t received your work by 4:00 p.m., I’ll send you an email stating so. See above for assignment cut off time.

    Hello, students:

On Monday, 3/16, most students gave me an email address through which I will communicate with them while schools are closed. If I didn't get one from you, please send it, along with your name, to my Board of Education email address.

  • As a reminder, here is a quick outline of things that students are required to do to benefit thier learning.

Although I put up notes online, this information does not go into depth. Students are required to take notes during class because this information will go into more depth. Also, if you don't  have notes, you don't have anything you can study for the tests.

Students are required to participate in class. If students don't ask me questions, I conclude it's because they know the information. If students don't know the information, I conclude it's because they haven't studied the information. If students don't respond to my questions, I conclude that the students have been tuning out the lessons.

Students are required to spend time at home reviewing the information learned in class and to take measures to help clarify the information.

These are the same ideas that we went over at the beginning of the school year and that are represented in the syllabus.

  • Go to the Notes section and open the file called "Online Textbook." This will tell you how to access the online version of the textbook.
