I am Ms. June Jones, M.Ed., LPC, the School Counselor, at A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School. It is my honor to be a school counselor here working with these great children, families, faculty and staff. I work with some of the most incredible humans every single day.
I began at Hains Elementary in January 2016, transitioning from a mental health therapist in our community to a school counselor. I have been in the Augusta area since January 2003 originally coming from Indiana where I obtained my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. After arriving in Augusta, I attended Augusta State University where I earned my Master of Education in Counselor Education. I am the proud mother of 3 incredible daughters, and enjoy going on adventures with them which include traveling and spending time with our family that lives around the country.
The focus of the School Counseling Program includes addressing the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of all students.
As a School Counselor, I provide brief Individual Counseling on topics ranging from social skills, conflict resolution, adjustment, grief/loss, etc. To have your child participate, please see Ms. Jones for further information. Please note that Individual Counseling in school is not the same as the counseling that would be provided in the community. I am happy to assist if additional information is needed.
Small Groups are also an important part of the school counseling program at Hains. Small Group topics vary based on need. Topics previously offered include attendance, social skills, conflict resolution, friendship, leadership, mentoring, etc. To find out more about small groups, see Ms. Jones for the permission slip and group availability.
Classroom Guidance occurs monthly in each class on topics related to character development among other topics to include career exploration, bullying prevention, friendship, kindness, bucket filling, tolerance, peer pressure, relaxation, organizational skills, study skills, time management, attendance, growth mindset, etc.
Twice a month for 30 minutes on Thursdays, at Hains Elementary, our students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade participate in Teachers As Advisors (TAA). Each teacher is paired with another faculty or staff member to present a lesson to the students in their homeroom class. During the 2020-2021 school year we will continue utilizing a new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum called Sanford-Harmony. Topics include Diversity & Inclusion, Empathy & Critical Thinking, Communication, Problem Solving and Peer Relations. I encourage you to talk to your children about topics discussed during the TAA time. These conversations should also include identifying caring adults in our building that they can reach out to for support.
Throughout the year, there are additional activities that I support to include Attendance, Yearbook, End of Year Celebration, Red Ribbon Week, School Climate, Positive Behaviors Information and Supports (PBIS), RTI, etc.
