Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. I. Ussin
ARJ Teacher of the Year, 2010-2011
I'm Ms. Ussin. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Journalism with minor classification in Family and Child Studies, and a Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Grades English/Language Arts (ELA) from Augusta (State) University. This school year (2018-2019) will be my 13th year teaching middle school ELA. I've taught 6th, 7th and 8th grades, so my range is wide and my experience vast. I like to think that I know "the middle school child".
I LOVE reading and taking my students to new places in our reading because I just don't believe there's a boring story. There's ALWAYS a way to incorporate life into any narrative. Even more than my love for reading is my love for writing. I love writing so much that I author 2 books and have 2 more in the works. My personal goal this year is to make my students the BEST 6th grade writers in Richmond County. We'll always be writing TOGETHER. I stress to my students, daily, that they have to be able to present themselves well in writing on even the smallest scale, no matter their profession. I work them hard, and I push them beyond their limits, but by the end of the school year, they'll be glad that they worked as hard as they will.
I'm convinced that no one enjoys teaching ELA more than me. I was born to teach children to understand, appreciate and enjoy the English language, so every day is a joy for me in my classroom.
When I'm not teaching ELA, I can be found writing, editing other authors' work, or teaching dance at my church or at Praise Movement School of Dance, Inc.
