FIRST GRADE
Welcome to first grade at Mc Bean Elementary! My name is Mrs. Cummings
This year, your child is going to learn, grow, and explore so many new things. You will be
amazed at how much growth your child will show and I am so excited that I will be there
for the journey!
All About me:
This will be my 25th year teaching, and my fifth year teaching at
Mc Bean. I graduated in December of 1988 from Savannah State University with a Bachelor’s
Degree in General Business Administration. I also graduated from Central Michigan University
with my Master’s degree in Elementary Education. I graduated from Troy University with a Specialist
Degree. I received a Specialist degree from Cambridge College in Administration Supervision.
Communication:
I believe that communication is essential to your child’s success in first
grade. I communicate with parents in many ways, such as using Class Dojo,
personal notes, phone calls, emails, behavior charts, and graded work logs. Please be sure
to check your child’s folder daily for any communication being sent home. If you have
any questions or concerns along the way, please feel free to reach out to me using the
Remind 101 app, an email to sherrmo@Richmond.k12.ga.us, a note sent with your child, or
by calling the school at 706-592- 3723.
Homework:
Your child will have homework MONDAY – THURSDAY. Homework
assignments are due the following day. Each week, your child will have a homework
calendar in the front of their folder. Please refer to that each night and initial. Please
remember to study spelling words, sight words, and math facts daily. Reading logs are
also to be completed each night (15 minutes)
Folders:
Folders will be sent home daily with homework assignments, monthly behavior
sheets and important forms that may need to be signed. Conduct grades will be sent
home each Monday for the week prior (folders do not come home on Fridays) and graded
papers will be sent home bi-weekly. Graded paper days are indicated on the back of your
child’s folder. Please sign any forms in the folder and return the following day.
Transportation:
Please send a note if your child will go home a different way. If your
child needs to leave school with someone other than a person listed on the release card,
send a note to school with your child (a note will not be accepted from the person
requesting to pick up the child). Also, we will not be able to take a verbal message from a
child. Written notes are required to make any changes to transportation.
Attendance: We need all children in school daily unless they are sick. Students who are
absent from school are required to bring a written excuse for their absence the first
day back at school (parent or doctor). The school will accept and count 5 days of absent
notes from a parent but the others should come from your child’s doctor.
I am looking forward to working with you and your student to make this a great year!
