    Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!  I am Coach Flowers and I look forward to teaching you this year.  I attended Georgia Southern University where I received a B.A in General Studies and received my Secondary Mathematics Teaching Certificate through the Oconee RESA T.A.P.P. Program.  I am certified to teach grades 6-12 mathematics in Georgia.  This is my fifth year teaching. In order for us to have a successful year, you should consider the following information


    Resources:  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Algebra 1 Textbook, the GaDOE Frameworks for Algebra I, and host of online resources including but not limited to the following: Canvas, IXL, USA test prep, delta math, Ed puzzle, and Math XL.


    Course Description and Goals:  Algebra I is the first course in a sequence of three required high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics applications. The major themes of the year are linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. 


    Instruction:   A typical day of instruction will for F2F students will begin with an opener consisting of a few problems to check for prior understanding or to extend learning opportunities.  Next, homework will be checked and/or collected. This will be followed by work and instruction which may include problem-solving, questioning, real-world connection tasks, and/or small group projects.  A “ticket-out” problem or summarizing activity will sometimes conclude the lesson.


    Learn from home students will receive one synchronous (live) session per week. The specific day depends on your class period. Students will be expected to participate and complete assignments asynchronously (on your own) for the remainder of the week.




    Materials:  You will need (1) composition notebook, (1) three ring binder, notebook paper, graph paper, and pencils.  A TI-30XIIs (or better) calculator is recommended.


     Grading: the following weights and categories will be used:

    Assessments/projects/task 40%

    Quizzes/specific computer assignments 35%

    Classwork/homework/discussions 25%


    Important Information

    •  Face to face tutoring will be held on Tuesday of each week. Students should check the information board for additional dates.
    • Students may request a live one on one tutoring session through FEV Tutor, our online tutoring system 24/7.
    • My "office hours" will be the same as school hours. During your child's class period, I will be available to meet virtually specifically for that class period. If it is not your child's class period, it may take me a few minutes or so to respond because I may be physically teaching or helping another student. Please be patient. 
    • The best way to contact me is by email; however, please know that if it is not within school hours, I may not answer until the next school day.
    • A quiz or test will be given each week. If absent students should be prepared to take the quiz or test upon returning.

    • Be Responsible (have appropriate materials for class, remain on task, and ask questions).
    • Be Respectful of yourself, the teacher and other students.

    Parent/Guardian Responsibilities for learn from home students:


    • Commit to providing learning support for children in this environment. Last year’s LFH model was a stop-gap measure; this year LFH will be much more rigorous, including new learning. 
      • Familiarize yourself with your child’s courses.
      • Support your student by developing a quiet space and a schedule that is conducive to digital learning.
      • Monitor the completion of assignments on a daily basis and encourage your student to ask for assistance when needed.
      • Ensure the student is learning the content.
      • Help the student navigate through the course. 
        • It is important for the parent to ensure their child is completing his/her own work so teachers know how to provide additional support.
        • Parents of middle and high school-aged students should expect the students to be more independent learners.
    • Follow the rules for how long children may be left unattended (set forth by the Georgia Department of Family and Child Services)
      • Children eight years or younger should not be left alone;
      • Children between the ages of nine years and twelve years, based on level of maturity, may be left alone for brief (less than two hours) periods of time; 
      • Children thirteen years and older, who are at an adequate level of maturity, may be left alone for up to twelve hours; and
      • It may not be advisable to leave an older child who has a special condition or disability alone.
    • Communicate regularly with the LFH teacher to ensure success in this learning environment. 
      • Failure to participate in required LFH sessions and/or complete assignments may result in course/grade level failure and/or the student considered truant.
      • Primary contact method will be by email and the teacher will call when appropriate.
      • Parents will receive class notifications through Infinite Campus, Google Classroom, and by email.
    • Parents may report concerns to the teacher first, then to the administrator of their child’s zoned school.

      • Allow for discussions through remind, email, and phone calls.
      • Allow for parent-student/teacher conferences upon request (teacher, student, or parent).
