Carl Timmons Spivey, Jr.

Carl Timmons Spivey, Jr. is a product of the Richmond County School System, attending John Milledge Elementary, Tubman Middle, and graduating from The Academy of Richmond County in 1975. While at ARC, he played baseball, winning the Most Valuable Player Award his Senior Year. He received a baseball scholarship to South Georgia College, as a pitcher, where he set single season records for complete games (12) and shutouts (5) in the spring of 1977. That record remains unbroken. Spivey received a baseball scholarship to West Georgia College, being named all SAC his Junior Year. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from West Georgia College in 1980.

Spivey began his career in education in 1981 as a Physical Education Teacher at Joseph Lamar Elementary. He taught stints at Windsor Spring Elementary, East Augusta Middle, Sue Reynolds Elementary, and Richmond Academy. He was the Head Baseball Coach at ARC from 1984-1994. Meanwhile, he earned a Master of Education Degree from Augusta College in 1993, and his Education Specialist Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1996.

After thirteen years of teaching and coaching, Spivey advanced to Education Administration. He was named Assistant Principal at Westside High School in the Fall of 1996. This assignment ended when he was appointed Principal at Tutt Middle School in the Fall of 1999. After three years at Tutt, he was named Principal at Westside High School, serving from 2002-2009.

Tim’s next assignment was Principal at the Academy of Richmond County from 2009-2012. As Principal, Spivey used innovative strategies to help students achieve greater academic success, while building positive relationships with students and their parents.  He also redefined the boundaries for motivating his teachers and staff.  Tim never forgot those who came before him.  Every retiree who served ARC was invited to a yearly Thanksgiving luncheon where the present and past mingled and shared memories.

Spivey became the Deputy Superintendent of the Richmond County School System in 2012, retiring on October 31, 2014. As Deputy Superintendent, he oversaw the day-to-day operation of the Richmond County School System. This includes high schools, Transportation, Maintenance and Facilities, the SPLOST program, Public Safety, Athletics, Discipline Tribunals, and School Zoning Exceptions.

Spivey was a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the National Association of High School Principals Association. His community activities included service on the Boards of Easter Seals and the Downtown YMCA.

As Principal at ARC, he became an advocate for making students and staff aware of the rich history of The Academy. Recognizing distinguished graduates, and their accomplishments, was a vital part of this awareness. To accomplish this goal, he created the ARC Hall of Fame. A committee was formed, bylaws were written, and requests for nominations came out. The program was a great success, with more nominations than openings. The process remains a success as this year marks the eighth with ninety-one inductions to date.

Spivey is married to Mary Beth, from Douglas, Ga. They have two daughters, Sarah Spivey Cagle (Steve) and Whitney. The entire family has devoted their careers to education. His wife, Mary Beth, is a retired Media Specialist from the Columbia County School System. Sarah is currently a First Grade Teacher at River Ridge Elementary School in Columbia County.
