William Marcus Fulcher, III

Bill Fulcher was born in Augusta on February 9, 1934. He graduated from Richmond Academy in 1952. While a freshman, he was on the varsity football team. However, at the first game of the season, he was stopped at the gate by a teacher who was collecting tickets. After Bill told the teacher he was on the team and had to go to the locker room, the teacher told him he was too small to play football and wouldn't let him in. Bill immediately climbed the fence to get to the locker room to dress out for the game. He played in that game and every game after that. After graduating at the age of 16, Bill went to Darlington Prep School in Rome, GA for a year so he could increase his size and strength. While there, he played football and baseball.

In 1952, he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Georgia Tech.  He was recruited by Coach Bobby Dodd. He played in the Cotton Bowl and two Sugar bowls and lettered as catcher for the baseball team. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1956.

With college football in his past, Bill earned a spot with the Washington Redskins.  As a rookie, he became the starter at linebacker and was on special teams for three years. Due to a knee injury, his football career ended. He was the first player from Augusta to play professional football in the NFL.

After coaching at Burke County High School, he became the head coach at Richmond Academy for one year and the team won the region title. While at Richmond, he taught psychology and mathematics. After leaving Richmond, he served as Assistant Coach at Georgia, Florida, and Georgia Tech. In 1971, after his coaching career at the University of Tampa, he was named head coach at Georgia Tech. He took the team to the Liberty Bowl game and Tech won by one point. He resigned after two years at Tech with a winning record.

Among his many accomplishments, he served in the Army with the Military Police at Fort Gordon and the National Guard. He graduated from Law School in 1975.

He began a new career in Real Estate and was the broker-in-charge of Sherman and Hemstreet. He is a life member of the Million Dollar Club and currently sells commercial real estate for Meybohm Commercial Realty.
