Programs
The Richmond County Nutrition Services Department is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our students through participation in multiple grant programs. Our mission is to provide nutritious, appealing meals and snacks that foster both academic success and physical development. For many students, school meals may represent their primary source of daily nutrition, making our work more critical than ever. We take this responsibility seriously and strive to ensure every child receives the highest quality nourishment to help them thrive.
FFVP
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides a variety of free, fresh fruit and vegetable snacks to children at eligible elementary schools. A USDA study found that FFVP students eat more fruits and vegetables than students who do not participate in the program. Schools deliver FFVP snacks along with bite-sized nutrition lessons. This encourages children to try new foods, learn about seasonal produce, and set healthy eating habits to last a lifetime.
Afterschool Snack Program
The afterschool snack component of the National School Lunch Program fills the afternoon hunger gap for school children. In order for the afterschool care program to be eligible, is must provide organized, regularly scheduled activities in a structured and supervised environment, including an educational or enrichment activity. Examples of eligible activities include homework assistance, tutoring, supervised “drop-in” athletic programs, extended day programs, drama activities, and arts and crafts programs.
Summer Program
The Seamless Summer Option (SSO) enables our department to provide free, nutritious meals to children and students aged 18 and under throughout the summer months. Meal sites are designated annually, and detailed information—including locations and menus—is published on our website each May to ensure families have easy access to these resources.
