The Policy and Legal Compliance Department ensures System-wide compliance with federal and state laws while supporting a safe and legally sound educational environment for the well-being of the entire RCSS community.
Examples of specific responsibilities of the Legal Compliance Office are as follows:
- Monitor State and Federal legislation and regulations that impact education.
- Provide training to administrators and staff on those laws and best practices.
- Review and revise Policy and Procedures at the Board’s request, in response to new legislation or School System needs and as part of the policy review cycle.
- Respond to and assist in resolving disputes in the areas of special education, personnel matters and various state and federal complaints.
- Respond to records requests such as open records and subpoenas.
The Department also provides leadership and oversight for Title IX compliance, working to balance compliance, due process, and empathy while recognizing the significant impact these matters have on individuals and school communities.
Over the past two years, the department’s leadership and “Safe Space Squad” have processed 298 Title IX and related compliance matters with a focus on timely response, procedural integrity, and consistent application of policy while supporting all parties involved.
The Department takes immense pride in the part it plays in helping transform abstract and often complex legal requirements into concrete everyday practices that foster a secure, efficient environment for all.
