About This Page
This page is designed to provide literacy resources for teachers, parents, and students. Our goal is to have every student reading on or above grade-level by 3rd grade.
What is literacy?
Literacy is a process by which one expands one's knowledge of reading and writing in order to develop one's thinking and learning for the purpose of understanding oneself and the world. This process is fundamental to achieving competence in every educational subject.
What is literacy development?
Literacy development is the process of learning words, sounds, and language. The acquisition of early literacy skills begins in a child's first year, when infants begin to discriminate, encode, and manipulate the sound structures of language, an ability called phonological awareness.
