 About This Page

Health and Physical Education in Richmond County aims to teach all students the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle. The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who possess the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in a lifelong lifestyle of physical activity and wellness. The 21st-century student will be a persistent advocate in promoting a healthy lifestyle within their community. Research shows that physically active students do better in school and learn skills that can keep them healthy for their entire lives.

The Physical Education programs aim to develop student outcomes that extend beyond teaching students how to play sports. Instead, these outcomes are centered around developing physical literacy

Physical Literacy refers to students learning those skills and tools necessary to attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle. With this new focus and standard for physical education, physical education programs should incorporate 21st-century learning strategies, rigorous and engaging physical education content aligned with Georgia State and National Standards, performance-based assessments, and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for at least 50% of class time.

Health Education programs provide young people with the knowledge and skills they need to become successful learners and healthy, productive adults. To help students adopt and maintain healthy behaviors, health education should directly contribute to a student’s ability to successfully practice behaviors that protect and promote health, and avoid or reduce health risks.
