Welcome Letter

Dear Parents,

I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Eric Berge and I am going into my 14th year teaching physical Education at Lamar-Milledge Elementary. My objective is to teach your child how to live an active and healthy lifestyle through different sports and games. We will be learning about different games, sport skills, team building, respect, sportsmanship, honesty, integrity and cooperation. Physical Education is a fun class that the students will enjoy coming to. I try to make every day fun and exciting so that the students can see how important exercise is to their health.

I require that your child wear tennis shoes in the gym for PE, because most of the time it keeps them from slipping and sliding and getting hurt. If your child wears a dress or skirt to school, they are required to wear shorts underneath because we do a lot of exercises and different game activities on the gym floor. No dress shoes, heels, flip-flops, sandals, or any open toed shoes are allowed on the gym floor for PE SAFETY reasons. If a child has on any of these shoes, he/she will NOT be allowed to participate.

I also require that your child does not chew gum, eat candy or bring food to the gym during PE time. These items attract bugs that we do not want to have in our gym. I also expect every child to be on their best behavior in the gym at all times. P.E. is a chance for the students to come and exercise and learn how to play different activities and sports. We don’t have time to take out of our class to deal with behavior issues. If there is an issue with behavior problems I will give them a warning. If the problem continues then I will call you and we can discuss my concerns and set up a meeting if necessary. If the behavior is violent or excessive in nature, the student will be referred to the office. A child may be excused from PE if he/she has a doctor’s excuse or a note from a parent stating the reason why he/ she cannot participate in PE. If your child has a medical condition that limits their activity, please let me know as soon as possible. Physical Education will be graded. Their grade will be based on whether or not your child actively participates in P.E.  The students will receive a numerical grade for 4th-5th Grades.  K-3rd will receive 1,2,3,or 4 to align with the district grading. I ask that every child try their best on everything we do in the gym but most of all they should have FUN. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at the school. Thanks for your support and I look forward to a fun school year.
