Guidance Services
What do I do?
My job is split up into four main categories including:
Counseling Services: These services are offered to students in both individual and group settings. They are designed to help promote the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of the students for optimal learning.
Coordination: As a counselor, I coordinate a variety of programs in the school including the TYEIL program for the 4th and 5th grades, assisting with testing, Red Ribbon Week, Black History Month, Bullying, Career awareness, RTI process and the DCES Sunshine Fund.
Consultation: Consultation is a major part of my role at DCES. I consult with parents, teachers, special education faculty, and administrators, community agencies, and other counselors in order to best meet the needs of our children.
Classroom Guidance: I teach a variety of classroom guidance lessons to each level throughout the year. These lessons include information on adjusting to school, problem solving skills, ways to handle bullying, goal setting, peer mediation, study/test skills, connecting school to the “real world”, career awareness, and easing the transition to middle school.
Why is this important?
In order for children to receive the most benefit from school, they need to experience academic, career, and personal/social development. As a counselor, I can help foster learning in each of these areas-both directly and indirectly. I want every child to feel safe and comfortable at school as necessary for the years ahead.
