    Career Discovery - Course Syllabus

    Course Description:

    The goal of this course is to promote essential skills and knowledge students need to apply self- assessments and decision-making skills while examining career concentrations and pathways. This course will expose students to positive work ethics, the importance of educational achievement, and the impact of societal issues on career choices. These essential components are necessary for educational and career planning success.

    In this course, middle school students will gain an understanding of career program concentrations and career pathways offerings in Georgia. Students will develop insight in how educational performance enhances career opportunities. Also, students will be exposed to work ethics and societal issues as they relate to educational and career goals.

    Course Format:

    This elective class is a blended class, combining classroom instruction with online learning.  Online learning will be delivered on Canvas. Both in class and home assignments are posted on Canvas. The class meets 2-3 times a week.

     

    Course Objectives:

    • Students will identify and evaluate work ethics and behavior characteristics needed for success in a career and in life.
    • Students will investigate Georgia’s Career Program Concentrations that align with their personal assessments and identify possible career pathways.
    • Students will understand the importance of attaining educational achievement and performance levels needed to reach personal and career goals.
    • Students will recognize the impact of societal issues on their ability to function effectively in a diverse and changing world.
    • Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas.
    • The student demonstrates competence in a variety of genres.
    • The student uses research and technology to support writing.
    • The student consistently uses the writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing.
    • Understands concepts and processes associated with successful entrepreneurial performance.
    • Explain the fundamental concepts of business ownership.

     

    Grading: Please refer to the school wide grading policy action plan.

    Methods of Assessment

    Methods will vary depending on the learning outcome(s) to be measured. A rubric will be provided for most assignments.

     

    Tutoring/Remediation

    Available by appointment during lunch or after school.

     

    Student Absence Policy

    Students have three days after they return to make up for any missed assignments or tests. After the third day, any assignments not submitted will be marked as missing. Students are responsible for getting any missed notes or assignments that were given during an absence. All assignments will be posted on Canvas.

     

    Late Policy:

    Late work must be turned in as soon as possible after it has been deemed late. At semester end, no closed assignments will be reopened.

     

    Cell Policy 

    Cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms. Phones must remain off or silent and completely out of view. Unless verbal permission has been granted by teacher after the instructional period has ended.

     

    Academic Honesty Statement 

    Honesty and integrity are integral components of the academic process.  Students are expected to be always honest and ethical in their pursuit of academic goals. Any student found in violation of the policy will ask to redo assignments. 

     

    Required Daily Supplies: 

    • Pencil or Pen 
    • Loose-Leaf Paper 
    • School-Issued Technology (With Power Cable) 
    • Corded Headphones 
    • Note Cards Optional 

     

    Classroom Expectations: 

    1. Be prepared for class daily.
    2. Be on time to class. Students will be marked tardy if late.
    3. Bookbags are to be stored beneath computer tables.
    4. Sit up and face forward in desk.
    5. Stay seated during instructional period.
    6. Use restroom during transition to class.
    7. No cellphone or headphone use during instructional period.
    8. No pictures or videos are to be taken of students in classroom, unless it is an approved project.
    9. No food, drinks, or gum. Clear water only may be kept in class hallway. Clear water may be used as needed in class hallway only.
    10. There will be zero-tolerance for foul language in the classroom.
    11. Students are expected to use proper etiquette when communicating with teachers and classmates online.

    Consequences for Inappropriate Behavior: 

     1st Offense – Students may receive a verbal warning. Second warning is in the form of a one-on-one conversation with student and parent contact.

     2nd Offense – Parent of Guardian will be contacted, and lunch detention will be served.

     3rd Offense – Office Referral
