    Course Overview

    The Marketing Principles course introduces high school students to the foundational concepts and practices of marketing. Students will explore how businesses identify, reach, and maintain relationships with customers while learning how marketing influences both business success and consumer behavior.

     

    Through real-world projects, case studies, and DECA opportunities, students will learn to think like marketers, apply creativity to solve business challenges, and develop skills that prepare them for college, career, and entrepreneurship pathways.

     

    This course is the first step in the Marketing and Management Pathway and serves as a foundation for future study in Marketing & Entrepreneurship and Marketing Management.


    Course Objectives

    By the end of this course, students will be able to:

    • Understand the basic principles and concepts of marketing and how they apply in various industries.

    • Identify and explain components of the marketing mix (product, price, place, and promotion).

    • Conduct market research and analyze consumer behavior to make informed marketing decisions.

    • Explore marketing strategies that businesses use to attract, retain, and engage customers.

    • Gain insights into digital marketing trends and ethical marketing practices.

    • Develop communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills through hands-on projects and presentations.


    Instructional Approach

    This course is hands-on, interactive, and project-based.

    Students will learn through:

     

    • Group and individual projects

    • DECA activities and simulations

    • Case studies and marketing plan development

    • Multimedia presentations

    • Guest speakers and local business engagement

    Assessment Methods

    Category Description Weight
    Minor Grades Quizzes, labs, and graded assignments assessing standards within a unit 60%
    Major Grades Unit tests, projects, essays, and culminating assessments demonstrating mastery 40%

    Make-Up Work Policy

    Students who are absent (excused or unexcused) have five school days after returning to complete missed work. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed assignments. Clarification must be requested before or after school—not during instructional time. Refer to the T.W. Josey Student Handbook for additional details.
