Welcome back Patriots!
“Patriotism” is a word that resonates deeply with me, so I’m glad to be part of the Westside Patriots family this year. The concept of “patriotism” has special significance for me as I think back to my early years as an immigrant child, and the journey that would allow my family to become naturalized citizen of the United States, the greatest country in the world!
Born in Rancho Boyeros, Cuba, my first language was not English but Spanish! It might seem ironic to you that I am teaching my second language, but it should not surprise us. See, when I came to this country, I was only seven years old. English became not only the social language I shared with my new American friends, but also became my academic language, the language that shaped my thinking and understanding of life and the larger world that had previously been hidden from me in Socialist Cuba. It is a little sad to admit I've never returned to the country of my birth, and I can read and write in both English and Spanish, I am better read in English than in my native tongue. So, while America has long been my home, I try to pick up and read a Spanish work here and there.
Having grown up in Miami, Florida, I'm grateful for Georgia's climate and Augusta's proximity to the ocean! My family owns a house on Hilton Head, so any chance we get, we're there soaking up the sun and collecting sea shells. Throughout my life, I've moved around some. I've been teaching since 2003, and over the past eleven years, I’ve taught both high school and college courses in Florida and Georgia. I'm here with you now following my recent marriage and move from Swainsboro, GA, where I lived for six years and taught classes at East Georgia State College.
I’m so excited to be joining the Westside family this year and really looking forward to getting to know each of you through the many discussions and learning adventures we’ll embark on together, especially sharing joy, hopes, and anticipation for what lies ahead for you this final year of high school!
So, whether you are enrolled in my AP Literature, or one of my British Literature classes, I hope this year will be an awesome and inspiring year of self-discovery and learning for all of us.
