• Thank You, Coach Gerald Barnes

Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence, Leadership, and Heart

After 46 remarkable years at the helm of Westside High School’s baseball program, Coach Gerald Barnes has closed the final chapter of his legendary coaching career with a resounding 10-0 victory over Laney. It was a fitting end to a journey defined by passion, perseverance, and profound impact.

Coach Barnes leaves behind a legacy that is unmatched in Georgia high school baseball history. With over 900 career wins, he retired as the winningest public high school baseball coach in the state, a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence and his deep love for the game.

But Coach Barnes’ legacy extends far beyond the scoreboard. Under his leadership, the Patriots achieved 40 consecutive winning seasons, captured back-to-back state championships in 1987 and 1988, and built a program that became a source of pride for the entire Westside community. His induction into the Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame in 2004 only further cemented his place among the greats.

More importantly, Coach Barnes has shaped the lives of countless young men—instilling in them the values of hard work, accountability, and respect. His influence has reached far beyond the diamond, helping to mold leaders, fathers, professionals, and citizens who carry the lessons of Westside Baseball into every corner of their lives.

As Coach Barnes reflected after his final home game, “You miss the people. You miss the sport of coaching… but the most special thing is seeing the people who have had success in life”

That sentiment captures the heart of his legacy: not just building a winning team, but building winning lives.

From all of us at Westside High School—students, faculty, alumni, and the entire Patriot family—thank you, Coach Barnes. Your dedication, your leadership, and your love for this school and its students will never be forgotten.

Once a Patriot, Always a Patriot.
