Seven schools in the Richmond County School System (RCSS) were named "Literacy Leaders" by the Georgia Department of Education for exceptional achievement or growth in the percentage of students reading at or above grade level.

 

“The Literacy Leaders program acknowledges schools that meet or exceed benchmarks in literacy education, serving as models of excellence throughout the state,” says Dr. Malinda Cobb, Associate Superintendent of Academic Services. “These schools have demonstrated exceptional progress in key literacy milestones, with notable achievements in third-grade reading and consistent growth across multiple grade levels. We are proud of our students for their hard work, and grateful to our educators and media specialists for instilling a love of reading in them.”

 

The RCSS 2023-2024 “Literacy Leaders” are:

• A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School

• Blythe Elementary School

• C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School

• Freedom Park K-8 School • Jenkins-White Elementary School

• John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School 

• Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School (RCTCM)

 

A.R. Johnson and Davidson Fine Arts received an add-on “Outstanding Achievement” recognition, given to schools whose students in the identified grade or course reading at or above grade level was 98% or higher.

 

Schools qualified for the distinction based on components of their Georgia Milestones, taking the Lexile score associated with the English Language Arts (ELA) assessment. RCSS schools joined 324 schools across the state that met the qualifications this year.
