Overview

The Board of Education is a policy-making body and serves as a legislative body in the development and evaluation of policies.
While the board is responsible for school programs and operations by law, it delegates some portion of the authority to the Superintendent. The board is governed by a President and a Vice-President who is elected by and from the board membership every two years on the Saturday preceding the second Thursday in January.
Regular meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Central Office Boardroom. Committee meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. The day and hour of these meetings are set each year at the first meeting in January and advertised in the local media. Any changes will be advertised in the local media several days in advance.
Richmond County School System Superintendent Candidate Applications
-
The Richmond County Board of Education has named two finalists for the position of Superintendent of Schools for the Richmond County School System. The finalists are Dr. Malinda Cobb, interim superintendent of schools of the Richmond County School System, and Dr. Keith Simmons, former superintendent of the Griffin-Spalding County School System. The Board of Education plans to name the next superintendent on August 12, 2025.
Before naming the two finalists, the 10-member Board worked in partnership with the Georgia School Boards Association to establish selection criteria and review applications from 35 candidates. From that process, a shortlist of six top contenders was identified. All six candidates were interviewed by the Board. These finalists have been identified by the Board as the most qualified candidates for the role.
In accordance with O.C.G.A. § 50-18-72(a)(11), the Board is naming the finalists at least 14 calendar days prior to the meeting at which a final vote will be taken.
Documents submitted as part of each candidate’s application will be available for public inspection and copying, as required by law. Please review the documents below.
